Second Grade Curriculum Overview
Second Grade at Trinity Episcopal Day School is filled with lots of activities where students are challenged and inspired in their learning. They enjoy collaboration throughout the curriculum each day. The Reading curriculum is a research-based, developmental reading and language program. The foundation of the program includes high-quality children’s literature as well as informational text. Students have the opportunity to read and work on individualized levels. Grammar and writing skills are an integral part of our Language Arts Program. The Math program was developed to enable children to acquire basic mathematical skills and to become life-long mathematical critical thinkers. Science includes weight and volume, the Earth’s surface, animal habitats, sound, and more with students visiting the Science Lab for more hands on experiences. They also learn how to effectively analyze, evaluate and interpret information reflecting critically on learning experiences and processes. Social Studies focuses on learning about our country and community long ago and today, evaluating multiple sources using technology and inquiry based problem solving.
Special Events and Activities:
Each student will choose an animal and complete a research project on his/her animal. The unit culminates with a field trip to the Global Wildlife Center to see and feed many of these animals.
Students enjoy a pen pal relationship with second graders in New Jersey whose teacher is a former Trinity Episcopal Day School student. Students practice their writing skills as they communicate throughout the year and end the year with a group skype.
As part of the 2nd grade Poetry study, students create their own books. Poetry books are shared with parents and guests at the end of the year Poetry Party.
Students are always excited during our study of sharks. They get a close up look when we dissect a Dogfish Shark.
